CSI role helps him uncover unknown family

American-born Chinese actor Archie Kao has even found family. 


Kao, who plays a criminal lab analyst on TV series CSI, said a few years after getting the role, a half-sister he did not know he had contacted him.

'She's a half-sister from my biological father's subsequent marriage. She called me up after seeing me on TV and got me in touch with the rest of the family,' said Kao in a phone interview from Los Angeles.

Added the 33-year-old whose parents divorced when he was only a year old: 'It was an interesting reunion. Now, I have seven new sisters. It's a big family.'

Kao's character, Archie Johnson - the name is 'a coincidence', he insisted - appears in only about six episodes each CSI season.

But still, he has racked up an impressive list of online shrines, thanks to his dashing good looks.

Kao candidly acknowledged that it is rare for Asian actors to get regular screen time on TV as roles are 'severely limited'.

REGULAR SPOT?


Yet, he's hopeful that one day he will get a regular credit spot on the show, just like fellow castmate Eric Szmanda, who also started out playing a lab analyst.

He said: 'I'm in most of the episodes this season - that's twice more than the last. It's really exciting to see the show grow. The cast is great. We've all become friends.'

Although he's still new in the Hollywood scene, Kao, who is represented by Fly Entertainment Singapore and Thailand in South-east Asia, is no stranger to regular TV spots.

Kids may remember him as Kai Chen, the Blue Galaxy Ranger in children's series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a gig he had for two years in 1999. 

It may seem like a less-than-stellar addition to his resume, but Kao good-naturedly embraces his past. 

'I love the fact that I did that show. At that time, there wasn't much opportunity for Asian actors. And this was the only job available, so I'm grateful for it,' said Kao, who has a degree in speech communication.

'I always tell my friends I was fighting crime for kids. Now, on CSI, I'm fighting crime for adults.' 
However, one thing he's glad to hang up are those skin-tight suits he wore as a Power Ranger. 

Now, his CSI character 'spends a lot of time at work' helping criminologists analyse videos and sound bytes to nab murderers.

In real life, Kao said he's hardly an 'audio geek', although he did win a state physics fair competition for a project on lasers when he was in school.

As for the future, Kao has been dabbling in producing work and hopes to expand his acting repertoire.

He said: 'At this point, I would really like to do a great comedy role.'
